Reiki

what is reiki?

Reiki (“RAY KEE”) is a form of energy healing or Universal Life Force Energy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” (1) “It is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonizing the body, mind, emotions and spirit, promoting relaxation, a sense of wholeness and well-being, and encouraging self-awareness, personal growth and spiritual development” (2). Reiki treatments vary based on the Reiki Master and their practice. Each person has their own style and it’s important that you find someone that you trust and are comfortable with.

  • gentle
  • non-intrusive
  • self healing
  • heal others including animals, plants

Reiki is called the laying of hands. Think about when you stub your toe, bump your elbow, scrape a knee, paper cut or receive some sort of pain. Our natural instinct is to place our hand on the injury.

who founded Reiki?

There are a couple of accepted stories regarding the history of Reiki. The following is a summary from the book, “The Reiki Manual” by Penelope Quest and Kathy Roberts. first is the Western history where Dr. Usui was asked by one of his seminary students if they would learn to heal the way Jesus did in the bible. In response to his own conviction, Dr. Usui embarked on a journey to learn to healing ways of Jesus and the Buddha. He fasted and meditated for 21 days enlightened. He spent his life healing the people of Japan. He passed his teachings on to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi (1878-1940) who healed a young woman Hawayo Takata. Dr. Hayashi taught Mrs. Takata who opened her own Reiki clinic in Hawaii. You can read the complete story in more detail in the Essential Reiki Book.

Mikao Usui

Dr. Mikao Usui (1865 – 1926) a Japanese Buddhist priest founded Reiki in the early 1900s.

how many levels of reiki are there?

There are three to four Reiki levels depending on the Reiki Training. According to the International Center for Reiki Training, “In the Usui/Holy Fire system of Reiki taught by the ICRT, there are four levels including one, two, Advanced and Master. We also provide Holy Fire Karuna Reiki® Master Teacher training.” (4) There are three levels of Reiki plus Reiki Master and Master Teacher. Each level requires an attunement.

  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3 Master
  • Level 3 Master/Teacher

Reiki principles

These five principles are very simple. You can try one at a time or try them all. It’s up to you. These can be used as a mantra to replace any negative self talk. A more in depth explanation can be found in “The Reiki Manual.”

Reiki is an ancient and profoundly simple system of “laying on of hands” healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism. In the West, Reiki has been kept highly secret for many years. ESSENTIAL REIKI presents full information on all three degrees of this healing system, most of it in print for the first time. Teaching from the perspective that Reiki healing belongs to all people, Diane Stein breaks new ground in her classic guide to this ancient practice. While no book can replace the directly received Reiki “attunements,” ESSENTIAL REIKI provides everything else that the healer, practitioner, and teacher of this system needs.

how does reiki work?

In a Reiki session, it can be likened to getting a massage. The more relaxed you are the  better the practitioner can do their job. If you are tense and fighting the masseuse then you won’t be able to enjoy, relax and receive the benefits form the work being done. Reiki is also like this. It’s important to establish trust with the Reiki practitioner. the more relax and open you are  the better able the Reiki Master is able to guide or open the flow of your energy. The reiki master is a conduit for source energy or life energy to help your body to what it needs to do. Your body is wise. It knows what healing you need regardless if you are consciously aware.

I heard one story recently on the radio where a man had been going to the doctor for months to figure out how to resolve a rash on his skin. He tried everything from topical creams to antibiotics and nothing worked. He decided to try a Reiki session and the Reiki Master felt directed to the shins. The Reiki Master asked the man if he had had surgery or an incident with his shins. Apparently as a child he had broken them had surgery and there was an infection that was causing rash on his face. Once the infections was resolved the rash went away.

It’s about connecting the subtle energies the information that is there we just have to tune into it. It’s like finding the correct radio frequency. If we’re on the wrong channel we can’t hear anything but static. As soon as we match to the correct frequency or vibration there is an entire world of information available to us. These are natural abilities that we all have.We are meant to use these God given gifts. We are just so distracted with life, and money, the material world that we have forgotten how to tune in.

what is a chakra?

A chakra is an energy center in the body. Traditionally there are seven chakras starting at the base of the spine up to the crown of the head.  Below are the main chakras along and the color with which they represent:

  • Root chakra, 1st chakra, Muladhara, red
  • Sacral chakra, 2nd chakra, Svadhisthana, orange
  • Solar plexus chakra, 3rd chakra, Manipura, yellow
  • Heart chakra, 4th chakra, Anahata, green
  • Throat chakra, 5th chakra, Vishuddha, blue (light or sky)
  • Third eye, 6th chakra, Ajna, indigo
  • Crown chakra, 7th chakra, Sahaswara, purple/violet

distance reiki

Reiki can be done in person or remotely by a Reiki Master. This is wonderful considering the pandemic and implementation of social distancing. You can receive the benefits of Reiki from the comfort of your home. We are not limited by the physical world. This is just one method to help establish the vital trust between the practitioner and the person receiving the Reiki.

We are all connected through the tapestry of life. We may only be able to see what is in front of us in the physical world. If you flip the fabric over you will see how the beautiful pattern and image was created. There is much work happening behind the scenes of which we are unaware. We can tap into this knowledge if we ask. It is available to us. It’s a fun way to look at life. It helps to expect miracles. When amazing circumstances happen we are no longer surprised but grateful instead for the Universe honoring our request.

hydrate afterwards

be sure to drink plenty of water afterwards. Avoid alcholol or other toxins immediately afterwards. you may feel tired after the session. it’s imporatnt ot take it easy, listen to your body. it’s liek working out. you may be tired after doing a great work out but then after you have cleaned up, rinsed all of the sweat and toxins off of you, eaten a good meal hydrated and gotten a good nights sleep you feel rejuvenated in teh morning. this is how reiki can be for some people. we cannot say that this  is how it is for all. reiki is a very persona exeperience and it wil be what you need it to be at the time you need. you may feel nohting at all, zero effects and that’s okay.

you may feel heat

I have always felt heat coming from the reiki practitioner’s hands. I have read that heat, tingling or a cold sensation are all possible. Expect that you may feel heat emanating from their hands hovering over the various chakras during the session.

I met one reiki master a few years ago who thought that she had won a free massage. after the reiki session she was confused and thought well that was a strange massage. this person was always cold. always wore a sweater.  in the weeks to follow, her body went through a change where her hands were hot and she no longer was cold all of the time. she called the reiki master to ask what they did to her. and then she ended up training and becoming a reiki master herself.

I have never had an experience like this but i have had emotional eye opening experiences and i have felt relief from reiki sessions. it’s difficult to explain and almost pointless unless you try it for yourself. going in with zero expectation is the best way to be. just go along for the ride. if you are healed physically, emotionally, mentally then wonderful. If you are not then no harm no foul. at least you were able to spend an hour or so of your time relaxing and disconnected from our chaotic world. That has tremendous benefits on our mental, physical and emotional health.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki has many benefits including relaxation, pain relief, stress and anxiety relief, and peace about a life situation. Reiki is like acupuncture, massage or yoga. Depending on the state of the body, Reiki can have difference healing effects. Reiki can be used to help heal people, animals, plants the earth.

Reiki can also be used as a spiritual tool to connect with our higher selves. The body speaks to us and Reiki can understand what the body is saying. We can hold trauma, fear or past experiences in our bodies. Reiki can help to move and release these energies. Reiki often provides a feeling that a burden has been lifted. Reiki is not a one time fix-all. Just like working out, if you work out once, you’ll feel great and get the benefits. In order to have continued growth and results, you must continue exercising. Reiki is a practice that one can do themselves. This is not to say that you need to have reiki sessions every week in order to reap the benefits. Like with mediation, it takes practice and develops over time. Be patient with yourself. Having a session with a reiki master can help you learn and release. we cannot alway s do everything on our own. we have friends and people oin our life for a reason. we are meant to help oneantoher. until you are at the point wehre you don’t need a teacher. You will be able to
